Hurricane Ivan
The Town of Quintana is about 15 miles from Brazoria. We visit occasionally to walk the dogs on Quintana Beach, and to watch for birds in the nearby wetlands.
Clint caught a siren salamander on the beach -- not its normal habitat. Ann put it in Wal-Mart bag for temporary transportation to a nearby freshwater wetland.
QUINTANA BEACH
One of two jetties at the mouth of the Freeport Shipping Channel (formerly the Brazos River before it was diverted). The beach is visible at the left of the jetty; the channel (dredged to allow oceangoing shipping to pass upstream to the Port of Freeport) is visible at the right of the jetty.
NEARBY WETLANDS Hurricane Ivan passed across eastern Texas twice. Although we didn't feel it in Brazoria, it produced high waves at the beach, and deposited several inches of new sand.
HURRICANE IVAN We took the dogs to the beach during Ivan's second pass. They loved it even though they got doused several times.
But the local grackles ignored the whole thing.
